Modem connections, especially Internet connections, are very critical of phone line quality and what is called "line noise". This can be caused by old or poor wiring inside your home, or conditions affecting the line from your home to the location you are dialing. Symptoms can be frequent disconnection's, or an inability to connect due to protocol or password errors. To compensate for this you can lower the maximum speed of the connection or port speed.
