FAQ Using FTP for Personal Web Space

Q. What is an FTP program?

A. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. A FTP program allows you to transfer files from your computer to any other computer on the Internet.

Q. How do I log in to my account to transfer files?

A. Type in the host name box ftp.westelcom.com and put in your username and password (same as your login account). DO NOT CHECK a box that says login anonymously.

Q. Once I’m logged in how do I transfer files?

A. Each FTP program does it a little different. Check with the programs help file or review instructions for how to publish to your personal web space.

Q. Now that I have my web site transferred, what is my web address?

A. All user account web addresses are: http://www.westelcom.com/users/username if your username is jsmith then your web address is http://www.westelcom.com/users/jsmith

Q. I have uploaded all my files for my web page and I have the correct web address but I still can’t load the page I just uploaded why?

A. Our server looks for a default.htm file to load. If your opening page file is not named default.htm, your page may not load properly.

Q. How much web/ftp space do I get free with my dialup account?

A. 10 Megabytes of space.

        Q. What if I want to register a domain name and have Westelcom
            Internet host it?
